ricordava pochi, a malapena.
Sempre!
anticipato.
I suoi doni raramente deludevano.
Nera dico bene, cioè scura, color cioccolata al latte, nemmeno fondente come piace a me.
Nera dico bene, cioè scura, color cioccolata al latte, nemmeno fondente come piace a me.
sentire indispensabili. Una volta era piuttosto facile trarre in inganno i
In quei
I suoi occhi erano neri,
me piaceva, e pure tanto.
rimettere a posto, li avevo rovinati.
mia principessa nera rimase senza capelli.
recapitato chissà come.
Eppure c’è cosi tanto intorno a noi!

accettiamo. Che urliamo e inveiamo, che parliamo a sproposito, pretendiamo, colpevolizziamo,
attacchiamo, come solo i grandi sanno fare.

Buon Natale a Tutti
A Black Doll
For Christmas
When
I was young, which was not so long ago, in my little village, in southern
Italy, there was no tradition of Santa Claus, or rather, if there was, it was
not like the one of nowadays, who flies around the world and visits children in
their homes, with grandparents, great-grandparents and uncles included.
Santa
of my childhood was a very old man, very inattentive and confused, but he was
always a happy man, with a smiling mouth, even if his head was always in the
clouds. Certainly he never seemed to age. The big, prominent round belly, the
nose always red because of the cold, and perhaps, said quietly amongst us, from
a drop or two. His dancing memory was better than his ability, it swung better
than the Estonia’s swings in the fantastic pavilion at Expo 2015.
This
Old Santa hardly remembered any of the children from my little village. But
that wasn’t a problem for the children, me included, because for all of us at
school our special Christmas visitor, came as “The Befana”. (That is a witch but a good one. Usually she
came on the 6th of January, and it is a tradition strictly connected
with the epiphany).
Often
it happened during the last day of school before Christmas holidays, and she, like
a good lady, organized and meticulous, did not forget any of us. She used to
check the lists of the city hall and those were always very precise.
But
the strangest thing was that she was not a real “Befana”, or rather, she wasn’t
dressed as a witch, all wrinkled and riding her broom, no, not at all! No, she
was something else. Often, due to her many commitments, it was not even her that
came, but she delegated that to someone else. Sometimes she was helped by the
mayor himself. Other times she sent a ticket, with a code, delivered by people
known to us children. They did not come from the North Pole, but they lived
much closer to us, someone in our own homes. The ticket was very precious, because
it contained a number or an alphabet letter, which was always associated with a gift. Always!
It
may seem a bit 'funny, I know. It will be said: “but so, why was she called
Befana? I really don’t know why. Her name was just that! And frankly,
heretofore, I have never asked myself why, nor have I ever worried about her
strange guise, or her early coming.
Her
gifts rarely saddened us. For us girls there was often a doll, and to the boys
a remote controlled toy car, but also games such as sapientino, monopoly and
coloured building blocks. For myself, I always
had dolls. But to be clear, they were always special dolls, every time different
from each other. One year, I do not remember if it was in the third grade of
elementary school, the “Befana” sent me a pink painted ticket, with a slightly strange
code, that indicated a very special doll. Even if "special", it was not
exactly my first thought .
It
was a Black doll. Black I said. Well, I mean dark, milk chocolate colour, not the
dark one that I better like. I had never seen a doll like her, before then. Honestly,
maybe I had never seen anyone of that skin colour. In the classroom, between the
classmates there were the satisfaction surveys on the gift received. Now, as it
often happens in these cases, especially among children, the other dolls present,
are always uglier or more beautiful, but never the same as ours.
Only
once at home, away from the eyes of gossips, that gift became special, as best
memories to which we give value only with the passing of the time. As I said,
Santa was a bit distracted and could not reach all the world children in one night.
For many of us then, that of the school was the only Christmas present! Most
important for us Santa Claus was the old dearest Saint Nicholas. He came during
the night between the 5th and 6th of December, and he
sneaked into the houses of all the children of the village with his sack full
of gifts, but, you know, they were not common gifts, as you could imagine, he
brought us hazelnuts.
Of
the way he did this entry, there are several versions, but certainly he didn’t
damage doors or windows. He left gifts in old shoes that we placed behind the
house doors several days before his arrival, and before going to sleep that
night... guys how big was the emotion, the heart went wild with the excitement,
for that waiting. And I really don’t think it was as much as the gifts, but
more for the magic, for the enchantment of that night. It was this sensation that
made us really happy. St.Nicholas did not bring us toys, he only gave us hazelnuts.
But they also became a game, of which we were very fond: the game was named castellucci. We made many little towers
with hazelnuts and then, in turn, with the same hazel we pulled toward the
tower of the adversary, trying to break his castelluccio
down.
Whoever
succeeded in their throw, added their adversaries hazelnuts to his, increasing
his hoard. We played in that ways until one of us was left without nuts, which
meant whole days of battles. Inside the
shoes sometimes there was a chocolate, a nougat or a susumella (a traditional Calabrian chocolate and honey biscuits) and,
rarely, a banknote, but only if we were really, really lucky. Then, it was no
problem if, as often happened, your parents asked you for that money, in
advance on spesucce, the household
expenses, promising you to give it back as soon as they could. Because, when
there was need in my home, parents often came to ask us casually, if we had
saved up a little bit of money. And we were very happy to show them our loot,
because we always had a little of something. The promise, of course was to
repay the loan as soon as possible, which could be immediately or it could slip
away and get lost with time. But, we did not care much because at that time,
you know, and only at that time, we were considered as adults, and the small
contribution made us feel really important to the family. Once it was quite
easy to deceive children ... try to do it now, try to do now a thing like that?
Just
thinking of the memory of that night made me feel excited, but most of all,
what excited me, is the happiness of my two sons. Their eyes sparkling on that particular morning,
every 6th of December, when they wake up at dawn to check their
shoes, left outside the door for the arrival of St. Nicholas which of course,
still brings the gift of shoes, hopefully full of hazelnut, not only of that,
but I am aware of the waning of tradition with the passing of the time.
It
saddens me a bit, to know that soon their joy will disappear, but in a corner
of their souls I hope they will always save the excitement of this magical
night. Alas, unfortunately, in the stages of life, the time dedicated to fairy
tales is too short, and even if I try to make them last as long as possible,
I’m aware that soon I will have to let them go.
As
I said, before losing the thread, for the first time, I already know it will
happen again, for that Christmas my personal “Befana” brought me a doll as a
gift, (I often use this expression,
because in Italian it is a verse of a very common poetry, Portò una bambola in
dono) a Black Doll. Of course the surveys of mates proclaim that my gift
was the worst of all. In those moments, there was no other chance left than to
swallow up, one after another the Magoni (the
desire of crying along ones throat) clutching my throat and pretend
indifference. I threw the doll into my school bag and I hoped to return home as
soon as possible, for only on my own could I reflect on the question, and let all
the tears stream down as they were rising from my belly. (??)
Trying
to give myself some explanation: “Maybe I had been very bad.” In fact, I wasn’t
as good as in other years, and St. Nicholas too, with the hazelnuts left also a
charcoal. Certainly they both agreed to give me an exemplary punishment. After I
swore to myself to be better in future, I took the doll from my school bag and
watched her carefully, and what a great surprise... she did not seem so bad.
Her eyelids opened and closed by themselves as soon as I gently touched them with
my fingers, and it was just so magic. Her eyes were black, sad and shiny, as tears
wanting to be held. Of that sadness, which was at that time also mine, I fell
in love instantly.
Despite
her strange colour, I realised that I loved that doll indeed.
My
mother, she was a little surprised too, but she immediately suggested to me, to
sew a new dress for her. And so, taken with new enthusiasm, I began to work for
the renewal of her poor wardrobe. I spent the carefree days of that Christmas
holidays between needles, threads and colourful clothes. I was always together
with my new friend. Although, over the years I gathered others dolls, she
remained in the basket where I kept my toys, in her majestic, composed clean
and composed colourful new clothes.
I
carried her with me everywhere, in my arms or in a wooden baby carriage that my
father built just for her. Maybe that was one of the few times I've ever played
with a doll, and not just simply destroyed her body as I often did with the
others. Even my brother’s remote controlled cars, were saved by the arrival of
my special Black doll.
But
despite the love I felt, I never gave her a name.
In
truth I've never been good in choosing names. Naming things makes them known
and therefore less mysterious, then it makes them yours forever, and I've always
had a bit of problems with things that last forever. There is only a thing that
will last forever, but at that time I did not know yet. But there was also
another reason, all the possible names sounded so strange to me, as they all
seems not suitable for her. I was only a child of seven years, I didn’t know
yet the musicality of languages of the world, their originality, imagination,
nor did I know the nuances of the colours of the people around the world. What
my reason as a child did not understand, or rather did not accept, was not referring
to her colour, or the fact that I could not give her a name, but her aspect,
how she look? Her hair and her dress: why were they so ugly? Because, I'll tell
you my friends, they were really, incredibly ugly. The dress was almost a rag, it
was checkered white and blue like those Italian taverns tablecloths, lost in a
time that will never come back, poor in mind, even of the most remote futuristic
desire.
Other
dolls, I mean the "blondes one", they were always well-dressed,
princess dresses, veils of tulle embroidered and pompous, long and blond hair,
beautiful to comb, to wash, to style with soft bristle brushes. My doll instead,
had short blacks hair, curly or to best say, frizzy, impossible to comb or style.
They grew up on her head in a somewhat messy manner. And even if her face was
beautiful, with a wide and large forehead, black large and sparkling eyes, her
hair continued to be a beautiful disaster.
To
the dress, as I said, my mother and I, remedied immediately. At that time, but not
now, I considered myself a pretty good seamstress. Cut the cloth, measured, by my
expert eye on the doll, it come out a dress, if not perfect, well, composed.
Red, were her lips, that I even made more brilliant with my pens, sleeveless,
because it was easier to sew, and very, very long. But she also needed underclothes,
because my mom used to say that back and baby’s bottom are always to be covered
for the good health. The panties were what I did best, shirts a bit less, but it
is better to be poorly dressed and clean than dirty and barefooted. I realized
several outfits for my doll, so that I could change her often, as the most
beautiful of princesses.
But
that hair... how incomplete things, that stand in front of you just to give you
the torment, they remained my despair.
I
was itching by the desire to style them. I found that hair bands suited her very
well, so I sewed many bands of different colours, matched with her new clothes.
But no, I was not satisfied: I wanted to comb them!
So
I decided to try. Alas, her curly hair immediately turned into a frizzy wool, impossible
to see. But above all, impossible to replace, I was worried, because I ruined
her. So I improvised myself as an hairdresser. Me, a disaster with my hair, me,
that never knew how to put together two strands, I made a horrible haircut that
made her hair very short. Suddenly I lost the scissors control: my black
princess was a princess with no more hair.
I
owned a black doll, with fabulous clothes, but without the hankered beloved hair,
forced to went out with a kerchief on his head.
My
mother was always so fine, she found this kerchief very stylish. But I
perfectly knew what it was hiding and I wasn’t happy to have given the vent to
my hands. Nevertheless I didn’t left my doll on her own after having defaced
her. I didn’t disjoint her of its valuable parts as I did with the others.
Maybe she is still in some boxes around my parent’s house, as my mom has the
mania to preserve everything. Sometimes,
my brothers and I, see her pull out some archaeological childhood that we
buried in corners of our memory made impassable by the time: my mother, I know,
she own hideaways everywhere in the house!
The
black doll is the only gift of that strange Befana that I can still remember
today. This could give you the importance she had for the baby girl I was. And
maybe, but without absolute certainty, her arrival in my life has led some of
the choices made in the early years of my youth, I’m quite sure that after her
the world has become less alien to me. But only Freud could say if there is a connection
between her and what really happen in my future.
Today
it is not the same. The Befana does not come during the last day of school, the
mayor does give her any aide. It is no even longer a code somehow delivered.
For several years she has been replaced by one of the many Santa's helpers who,
like the original, was dressed in red and wearing a fluffy white beard.
This
novelty caused considerable perplexity among children, get used to receive
gifts from the real Santa, the only one that came with his beloved reindeer
sleight during the night of the twenty-five of December, the same who become
more careful. Maybe it started a memory treatment, because today he forget very
few children, nay, I would say no one anymore. He must have bought an iPads, sure
he holds an agenda well organized by goblins, with all the world's time zones.
Not only that, he also receives letters, preferably e-mail, directly to the
North Pole, thereby he can satisfy every request... well, you know, almost
always, when he can’t, he try to get as close as possible to the children
desire.
The
question now was always one, and it was quite embarrassing: mom, dad, but what
is the real one?
Help!
I believe that in making the world easier for everyone, we made our life harder than ever. And tales, my
beloved tales in this world do not seem to find any space. Simple, sure is
nice, simple is definitely better, simple is certainly nothing for us, modern
parents.
The
relationship with our children has become a continuous trudging on a road that
runs too fast, and where we are for the first time. You try to keep for them a
little of magic, but at what price? It seems that anything is enough. Though there is so much
around us!
At
the end you find yourself to forbid this, ban that, remedy to the other, and in
this whirl of contradictions we have no other chance than renegotiate the terms
of the oldest barter: if you do, if you want, if you study, if you eat, if you
sleep: you can have, you can do, you can go. I suppose that all our
inconsistency does nothing but overwhelm them, make them weak and naive in face
of this world that pretends to be simple and accessible, but that really is
hard and ruthless.
But
I got lost again, I warned you this would happen.
Back
to Santa Claus, one day even this Santa’s helper stopped arriving.
Italy
government communicated its citizens to be in a bad disruption. The mayor was
forced to send an e-mail to the North Pole with whom he cancel all the orders
from them to years to come. And with no little regret. Today's children it is
well to be honest. They know quite well what the crisis is. That if Dad is at
home, while Mom is at work, it is because the crisis has closed the factory of dad
and mom had to step up her commitments to get right with the household income. This
is why she is always tired and angry. But if they could understand crisis, they
could not understand this statement,
they are ever children at heart. And mom is always mom, the only person in the
world that you could hate with the same intensity with which you love her, you
know in your heart she is the only person you can’t do without.
The
real problem, are we, the adults, we know all the things, we know about crisis,
we know about the changing but we do not accept anything. We scream and we
inveigh, we speak out of turn, claim, blame, attack, as only good adults could
do.
But
the question is: is this modern Santa Claus really better or it was better the
one of yesterday, the one that when he could not, in my village sent in his
place that strange Befana?
This
is a question with no reply in my own. I like to remember that time fondly, but
without joining the club of "those of Remembrance".
I’m
not of those people who start talking only about the past experience. I like
walking and I love having sun in my face, always forward, never backward. And
then, Santa of nowadays is very nice and amazing. I definitely love him. I
really like his big belly, full of cheerfulness.
What
I really miss of the past is a little of the magic that was in the air, such as
the evening before St. Nicholas arriving, or the Befana’s day at school. I also
miss the days of only one gift, but be sure, at that time, I would never have
said this.
I
miss that strange Befana, who brought black dolls by ugly clothes and short curly
hair. And yes, we wondered why, but at the end there was not matter, because we
played the same, and we were not afraid of the different ones.
So! In short, I realised in this
self-contradictory story, that in the deepest of my soul I only miss the tale.
That
wonderful time when, even a black doll, dressed in rags could wear a pretty
dress and become a princess. Sure with a lot of imagination, and she could go
round the world, looking for her charming prince, and maybe she realized he was
black too, and rich and really beautiful.
And
maybe, who knows, with lot and lots of luck, he would be the next president of
the United States of America.
After
all, I know, or I am quite sure, that fairy tales still exist, but they love to
get confused with reality!

Stoner, lui accetta in silenzio. Una sorta di stoicismo Stoneriano, o
semplicemente indifferenza assoluta.
Entra qui in gioco
È costretto così a rinunciare all’amore,
sopraffatto dall’incapacità di lottare per esso.
Paura di affrontare la
vita la sua? Forse.
provare rabbia, silenzioso, giorno dopo giorno aveva lavorato fino a
distruggersi. A Stoner
esistenza.
poteva ignorare, era lì, e vi sarebbe rimasta.

STONER FROM THE FIRST EDITION USA 1965
William
Stoner’s life is a sad life. It wears out slowly, without many highlights.
Nobody will have a special memory of him.
For younger people his name is just a sound that does not evoke any past
or special identity.
Sometimes
we ask for something, just to fill an embarrassing moment in which we find
ourselves without words. We do this, as we do not want to let other people know
that we are bored with them, or not interested in their arguments (in the
conversation). But we really know that
any answer to our questions, will be of interest to us. It will wander in vain
around our brain looking for a free space, but not finding it.
“…Rarely
the curiosity goes beyond the simple occasional question ..."
“Stoner” is
a novel about the life of a man, who is not even a shadow of those we could
call literary heroes. As a heroic protagonist he achieves little. He is simply
a man who lives his sad life in an historical period that is as wistful as his
life. But Stoner is simply the most beautiful novel about the complete life of
a man that was ever written. Or maybe, that I have ever read!
He was born
in 1891 in Booneville a small village in Missouri, as a poor farmer in a barren
and hostile land. He died in 1956 in the city of Columbia, a poor professor in
a small university without many academic ambitions. Throughout all his life he never moves out of
Missouri. He never felt the need to do it. It was as if the world frightened
him, with its vastness.
Of those 65
years of life, we know everything about him. Stoner's life goes through the
historical events of the twentieth century, but the author, John Williams,
paints them in with a gentle pen tip. The protagonist is crossed by events, but
he never gets lost in them. The historical reference is always light and essential.
During the First World War he became a professor, but the war took away his
good friend, Dave Masters. The Prohibition years in USA, frame the first years
of his marriage; the Wall Street crash, followed by the economic US crisis,
shut down his finances including the mortgage on his house. World War II takes
away his daughter's husband and razed the university population.
But these
are not the main themes of the novel written by John Williams.
The basic
theme, in my own opinion is Resistance. Everything happens to Stoner. Above all, everybody seems to rage at him,
without any special reason. His wife, Edith, with her hysteria-selfishness
arouses anger in the readers, but never once does Stoner himself, resort to or
try those same emotional outbursts. The fury of Edith in destroying him would
have provoked a reaction of the same emotional quality with anyone else,
especially when she starts using the innocence of their little daughter, Grace.
But not Stoner, he accepts everything in a heart-rending silence.
Is it a
kind of Stonerian stoicism, or just an absolute indifference? His wife seems to
resent the small happiness of her husband. She hates her husband with a hatred
that has no reason to exist. She does everything to make him unhappy. First depriving
him of the beloved daughter of whom, he often took care, while she was away or
too busy in her egoistical existence, the daughter with whom he had a wonderful
relationship. She then deprives him of the only space in the whole house, in
which he chose to live his sad and lonely life, the study. The only place where he could find peace, the
place where he could be himself, and where he worked, lived and slept. In the
study he did what he best liked to do, spending time with his daughter, and
writing and receiving students. This was the whole world for him.
When he
finally manages to be happy in an extra conjugal love relationship with
Katherine Driscoll, there is someone else willing to do anything to make him,
once again, unhappy. Strangely, it is not that his wife knows of the
relationship. She does not care much about it. Really, it seems that the
married life goes better after Edith learns of the love affair. She called her
husband's mistress "your little girlfriend" but without anger or
jealousy.
Now comes
on the scene, Lomax. A university
colleague injured physically, but with a nice handsome face, and quite
ambitious. Since his coming, the reader expects to find out how and when this
ambition will manifest itself against Stoner. It will happen at work. Lomax
will, for a personal grudge, as soon as he became the director of the English
Literature department, annoy Stoner till the end of his life. Taking away from
him, his serenity in the only place where he could still hope to find a little
peace. He is thus forced to give up his beloved Katherine Driscoll, overwhelmed
by his inability to fight for her.
Is Stoner
afraid to face life? Probably. It also happened during the First World War,
when his best friends join up for the war . Dave goes to fight in Europe,
Gordon joins the US army, and he, the peaceful and quiet William Stoner remains
at home. There is then, a small victory in the passive life that he leads,
something which when reading, made me rejoice whilst making me really proud of
him. It takes place at the moment when, with a strong decision, Stoner rejects
a Lomax favoured student, called Walker, who is as crippled as Lomax. This is
so totally unexpected.
In this
passage of the book, Williams leaves to the reader the choice of the hypotheses
that were open with the introduction of this strange character. Lomax knows
that Walker is unable to effectively teach but he protects him simply because
of his physical deformity. Or does Lomax really believe that Walker is as good
as he says? As is often said, “To
posterity the judgement”.
Each reader
of the book (if you have not read it yet, DO IT SOON!) will form his/her own
opinion.
However,
Stoner believes that Walker is lazy, dishonest and ignorant. Unable to teach
and, above all, unable to take a doctorate. Stoner is inflexible in his
principles, with an inability to reach any compromise. The way he faces Walker,
gives the reader the idea of what teaching is for Stoner: a real mission!
Lomax will be ruthless with him. Stoner accepts the consequences without
flinching, even when the Lomax revenge bursts on the poor Driscoll, forcing the
two lovers to put an end to their relationship, causing the sudden departure of
Katherine. Stoner will not see her
again. From that point on, for the
vanquished Stoner, it will be a continuous decline, both physical and moral.
Stoner’s health will be really bad for the first time in the summer, immediately
after Katherine leaves.
Lomax is
still making each university day very difficult for Stoner. He takes him off
all his beloved seminars, and entrusts to him the freshmen lessons.
There comes
another episode of courage that rejoices the reader and it occurs when Stoner,
finally tired of that situation, tears up the calendar entrusted by Lomax and
changes the courses programs, making them unsuitable for students of the first
years. Lomax will fly into a fury, but he has no power on this situation so he
is forced to give him back his old courses and seminars.
In the post
edition of 2012 published by Fazi Editore, Italian Version, Peter Cameron
defines the work of John Williams, as almost miraculous. The writer makes of
William Stoner’s life, "... an exciting story, heart breaking and
profound."
Frustration
is the feeling that I most often felt while reading. One can not fail to love
Stoner and therefore cannot accept that he lives his life in a constant state
of abandonment, with ineptitude and liabilities. A humiliating life, especially with a wife,
who deprives him of everything.
Time comes
to retire. Stoner is 65 years old and Lomax is in a hurry to put him to
retirement. But Stoner knows that without teaching he will be lost, so he
decides to go on with his work for other two years. The University settlement
allows him to do so. But destiny continues to punish him: he discovers that he
has a tumour. "...Oh, Willy you are all diseased inside." Edith says,
while he is dying on a bed on the house’s porch. A kind of storage room where
Edith banished him a long time before the illness and after having taken him
away from the beloved studio, the room in which Stoner worked, lived and
slept.
Here is
what really happened. Edith tells us in her own slovenly and tactless words.
Stoner was eaten away inside. His body did not tolerate his continued endurance
and his inability to feel anger, and quietly, day after day he worked on ways
to destroy himself. Sometimes, for lots of us (me included) even a simple shout
can be liberating. Stoner never screamed.
When death
is approaching, his wife continues to be insensitive and selfish. Never uses
tactful words, and never seeks to lighten the terrible sentence. The daughter
lives a life just as miserable as her father’s, maybe worse. She confesses to
her father that she got married just to get away from that house, she had never
loved the young husband who had died in the war, and she had had a son only to
achieve one ambition.
Grace is only twenty-five but looks ten years older,
she is devastated. She also confesses to her father that she is an alcoholic.
When Stoner learns that his daughter is an alcoholic, nothing remains to him
but “...to be happy that at least she had that, he was grateful that she could
drink."
When it is
all over Stoner from his bed on the porch, traces the small achievements of his
life. He does so in a way almost unbelievable. It was as if, in that moment of
separation, he could have the ability to see what the living people do not see.
The reader perceives this transcendental feeling and it seems to outline the
impossible idea of what is awaiting all of us, sooner or later. Williams
through his words, articulates what words cannot describe. What Stoner had wanted, what he had, the
friendship, a marriage that he knew was unhappy from the first day. He had soon realized "...within a month
that his marriage was a failure"; he also knew true love, but he gave up
on it. Finally, he had wanted to be a teacher and he had become a teacher, but
even so, Stoner always considered himself a mediocre teacher. Inside himself,
when at some point the words do not come out anymore, Stoner often repeated a
question in his mind: what did you expect? What did you expect?
"...Softness
enveloped him and a languor crossed his limbs. The consciousness of his
identity caught him with a sudden force, and he felt the power. He was himself,
and he knew what it was. "
He takes a
book from the night table, it is faded, and in the confusion of the last
moments Stoner recognizes himself. It is his book, the one that he had written
several years ago, his small contribution to the world. The only memory that
would remain after his passage. "...And yet, he knew that a small part of
him, that he could not ignore, was there,
and there it would stay. He opened the book, and as soon as he did, the book
ceased to be his. "
